Creating board covers for your Pinterest profile is the first step in creating a more professional looking profile. Gain followers and get noticed with unique board covers.

Hello there, so glad you’re here! In this post we will be discussing creating the perfect board covers for your Pinterest account. There are many free options on the market for developing your own pins and board covers but I have a couple that I simply adore. Keep reading to find out which is my favorite for designing the perfect board covers for Pinterest.

But first, I want to talk a little bit about why board covers are important on Pinterest.

A board cover gives you the ability to basically create your own brand. When you have your own brand, you look more professional to your followers and it is great encouragement for others to follow you. If you decide to start a blog in the future (wink, wink) you already have the colors and brand for your blog!

Now, as I read other blog’s posts about this subject, there is a pretty even split about board covers on Pinterest. Some say they aren’t necessary to gain follows and many others disagree with that. I like the fact of using board covers and I fall onto that side of the debate. So, what is the debate about? Well, bloggers that agree with me will tell you the same things I am about to tell you here, and the ones that do not agree have only one main reason against them. They argue that they can’t see the boards content if it has a custom cover.

I disagree with that argument because it still displays a few of the pins located within that board to the side. So, if you are on the fence about it, try it out and see if you get an influx or a decline in your follows. With my experience, my followers doubled after making the change to board covers for my profile.

What I mean by creating a brand, is basically creating a theme for your profile. Eventually when others see those colors or the style of the pin, they will know that it is from you. A brand is what sets you apart from others and when people see your pins or colors they know it is from you.

Getting Started with Design

Now, on to the really fun stuff. I honestly had so much fun designing my covers. I have always liked art and design (that doesn’t mean that I am great at it) but I do love it.

Now that you have an idea of what type of color palette you would like to use, we are going to head to one of my favorite design sites.

I use a creative site called Canva. You may or may not have heard of it, but I have to tell you, I adore this site. In Canva, you can create anything you can imagine, such as post cards, letter heads, stationary, photos with text, info-graphics, and the list goes on. They do offer a paid premium service but I have never actually spent a single dime to create superb images and designs. Their amount of free options is well beyond everything you need.

One of the features that I find really handy is their color palette generator. This topic sort of back tracks to the branding section but I love this feature and had to share it with you. So, you can upload any photo that you love, and it will create a color palette for you based on the colors in the photo. I had this awesome picture for my blog, with pinks and golds and purples and I always levitated towards that photo. This photo ended up being all the inspiration that I needed to create my brand colors. I uploaded it to Canva’s Color Generator an it created the perfect palette for me.

So, if you have a photo that you love and want to use that as your inspiration, this is the perfect tool for you! You can access it right here!

Canva has unlimited abilities when it comes to design but don’t let that intimidate you. My motto is, the simpler, the better. One of the things to keep in mind is that you want your board covers simple and straight to the point. A bunch of crazy designs will make your profile look cluttered and disorganized and you certainly don’t want it to be an eye sore. You want people to say “wow”, not “whoa”!

Canva has a handy size guide, including a Pinterest graphic size. Your board covers are 800px by 800px but using the Pinterest graphic is actually something I recommend. I recommend this for a couple of reasons. First, a longer or vertical pin looks better in your boards, versus a small square pin. Second, you can reuse the image for your board covers, as a link to your boards. I will talk about doing this a bit further down in the post. Killing two birds with one stone.

Here are the steps to creating your board covers in Canva.

  1. Go to Canva and create a free account.
  2. Select Create a New Design
  3. Select the Pinterest Graphic Template
  4. Start editing! (I know this is easier said then done) I will include some links below to some images that I have created. Follow me on Pinterest to get even more inspiration! I would love to see your newly designed board covers! I even have a special board specifically for board cover creations and inspiration. You can find that board here! Feel free to use them as you please. I don’t mind sharing 🙂

Now that you are on your way to creating a new brand for your profile and gorgeous board covers, I want to go over a few important tips with you. Canva can be intimidating at first. There are so many options available and so many different elements. My advice? Don’t try to learn it all right away. Use the basic tools that you know and understand and figure it out as you go. They have a ton of helpful guides and videos explaining their tools and how to use them, take advantage of them. This is a link to their tutorials and helpful guides. They are actually fun to watch and very informative. Before you know it, you will be a design pro!

Need ideas and inspiration? Canva can help with that too. They have awesome templates to use and so many inspirational guides. You can check those out here.

I could look through these ideas for hours. There are so many different designs that I love and super helpful tips everywhere on the site. I have considered doing a walk through video on my process of using Canva, and I make my designs. If that is something that you would like to see from me, please leave a comment below this post.

Alright guys, go create some amazing board covers for your Pinterest Profile. I would love to see them when you’re done. Follow me here on Pinterest and I will check out your profile. I love seeing what the imagination can bring.
